Shoulder surgery technology maker Catalyst OrthoScience announced it’s become the founder partner for shoulder with Redefine Surgery, whose platform merges computer vision, AI, and robotics to provide a more accessible alternative to conventional robotic surgery.

Redefine’s visual navigation and robotics platform is designed as the foundation for an AI surgical mentor, using trackerless computer vision without fiducials or arrays. The company said early lab testing showed registration in seconds and about 1 mm/1° accuracy in key steps. Compact, reusable instruments integrate with robotic adjustment and are designed to fit existing orthopedic workflows.

The partnership expands Catalyst’s role in optimizing shoulder replacement by connecting data, clinical decisions and outcomes. Earlier this year, the Naples, Florida-based company introduced a single-tray option for its shoulder fracture system.

The companies aim to establish new benchmarks, targeting up to fourfold greater procedural efficiency and 10-fold lower technology costs. The duo said the approach goes beyond individual devices, robotics, or navigation by integrating data and outcomes at scale to improve clinical, operational, and economic performance.

They will develop an integrated ecosystem spanning pre-op planning, intra-op guidance, workflow optimization, data capture, and procedural analysis. The platform is designed to learn from real-world data and inform clinical decisions over time.

Comments from Catalyst OrthoScience and Redefine Surgery

Carl O’Connell, president and CEO of Catalyst: “At Catalyst, we’ve never viewed ourselves as simply an implant company. This partnership reflects our commitment to advancing shoulder arthroplasty across the full episode of care. We believe the greatest opportunity for innovation lies in helping surgeons make more informed decisions by connecting information, workflows and clinical insights in ways that were previously not possible. While surgeons are central to that transformation, the impact extends across healthcare, helping hospitals, ASCs, care teams, payers and ultimately patients.”

Peter Verillo, CEO of Redefine: “The future of surgery will belong to organizations that can effectively capture, understand and apply clinical knowledge. Together with Catalyst, we’re working to create a surgical intelligence ecosystem that helps transform information into insight and insight into action across the full episode of care.”
